Maggie had a hard time completing the project and wanted to hear from her foreign colleague. So she asked:
(X)How do you think of the proposal
The foreign colleague didn't want to come by until she found out what Maggie was asking:
(O)What do you think of the proposal
In Chinese, we say, "What do you think about the plan?" Because there are two words, it's only natural to think of how, but it's wrong, because how, how, how, how, and how, if you ask, it's like, "How do you think..." and "how do you think..." that doesn't match the original idea. Together, it is very likely that the English question will be translated in Chinese alone.
(X) Where is the capital of Canada?
(O) What is the capital of Canada?
The two messages are different: the former asks where the capital city of Canada is, and the latter asks which city is Canada’s capital. Many want to ask the name of the city, but they wrongly use the question because the Chinese method is “where.”
(X) How's the environment like near your house?
(O) What's the environment like near your house?
例如:How was that movie? What was that movie like?
How is asking about people's health or the state of things, what is... like looking for descriptions of people or things. For example: How was that movie?
(X) How much is the price of that chair?
(O) What is the price of that chair?
How much is the chair?
The Chinese word "How much" is used to ask questions, but note that there is a price on the back of this question, and how much of it is meant by the price, so what should be changed to what?
(X) How many is the population of New York?
(O) What is the population of New York?
問人口有多少,可以說“What is the population of New York?”“How large is the population of New York?”或“How many people are there in New York?”
What is the population of New York?
(X) Who of you has sent in your application?
(O) Which of you has sent in your application?
Who of you has been regarded as an ancient usage, and in modern grammar, only the wich can be picked up after it.
